Explore Your World: Minicourses for Adults: Our Supreme Court from Birth to Present Day

Our Supreme Court: From Birth to Present Day: Is it the Least Dangerous Branch?

Join us for a fascinating six week lecture series on the U.S. Supreme Court.  From the days when it was first established under Article III of the Constitution, until present day, Supreme Court expert, Dr. Ian Drake, Associate Professor of Political Science at Montclair State University, will take you from the early days of the Court to our present day, examining the evolution of our Court from its birth through to modern day landmark cases such as Roe v. Wade and the Masterpiece Cakeshop decisions.  Class participants will wend their way through the Civil War days of the Court, examine the impact of The New Deal and how the Great Depression shaped Court decisions, and discover how the Supreme Court wrestled with the Civil Rights movement.  You’ll learn facts along the way—did you know the Supreme Court as established was to have a total of six Justices, however for most of its history there have been nine?  And it is Congress, not the Constitution, which sets the number of Justices?

This program made possible by the Summit Area Public Foundation. Registration is required and is limited to 40.
