Turn Up: Media Literacy & Violence Prevention
Making Sense of Words, Sounds & Images to Build Healthy School Climates
A program for Grades 9-12
We all recognize that teens are inundated with countless media messages in all kinds of formats. Some messages are positive and uplifting, while others fuel their insecurities, reinforce stereotypes, or minimize the real effects of violence.
The repeated, clichéd presentation of both young men and women in the media has a role in fostering teen attitudes and beliefs about gender. In turn, gender inequity is one of the underlying risk factors that may contribute to interpersonal violence in all of its forms.
Join the Union County Rape Crisis Center (UCRCC) at Summit Free Public Library on Zoom, from October 14-December 2 to explore:
- How media affects our attitudes and behaviors towards one another.
- How media targets the beliefs of specific audiences.
- How to uncover hidden contexts and subtexts in media .
- How to reconstruct media messages that reflect the positive aspects of self-esteem and healthy relationships.
If you attend all of the workshops, you will also receive a special prize at the end.
