Serendipity at the Library In-Person

Serendipity at the Library:  Every Thursday at 4 PM, on the library's front lawn.

Serendipity is a stories and songs program for elementary school students entering Grades 1-5.

July 1   Koko-Love!  Conversations with a Signing Gorilla.  Dr. Francine Patterson taught Koko, the gorilla, to communicate by sign language.  Koko learned so many words, she could answer questions, make requests, give her opinions, and joke.  The books by Dr. Patterson are filled with many photos and loving and funny tales of Koko.

July 8  Unlikely Friendships Between Animals.  Jennifer Holland reports 47 unusual friendships, such as the black bear and the black cat,  the owlet and the greyhound, and the bobtailed dog and the bobtailed cat.  The author explains the origin of these friendships.   Photographs are truly amazing and touching.

July 15  Camels, Facts and Fiction.  First the facts!  Then the fun!  12 camels are mistreated by an evil  wizard, Ali Beg.  They must shade him every day from the hot desert sun, and stand up all night waiting for him to return on his magic carpet.

July 22:  Virtual Serendipity

July 29  The classic story of Black Beauty, retold  for younger readers by Sharon Lerner in a picture book. The lovely and dramatic illustrations are by Susan Jeffers, who  is “universally hailed as one of the foremost artists in the field.”

August 5  Wolves and Turtles are not Best Friends!   Turtle’s shell was once smooth and shiny.  How did it become cracked?  Cherokee animal stories are sometimes funny!

August 12: Animal Heroes:  True Rescue Stories.   Do you know of any rescue stories?   A friend told me her 18 month old fell off the pier and into the water.  Immediately the family dog, a shepherd, jumped in, caught the baby by the diaper and swam to safety.

August 19:  Presidential pets : the wierd, wacky, little, big, scary, strange animals that have lived in the White House (2012)  If you become president one day, what pet will you choose?
